Titlis glacier
Here's a great outing to beat the summer heat and get some great views without the work. We went to Titlis, a glacier reached from Engelberg valley, southwest of Luzern, about 1.5 hour drive from Zurich. It takes a series of gondolas to get to the top, including the world's first revolving aerial cableway. At the top, there are a few restaurants (the pizzeria was better than average), a glacier cave (slightly scary for toddlers), and a large area of glacier snow to play in, while you take in the views. If you also want to hike, there are several trails at Trübsee, the halfway point. I thought it was much more beautiful and fun than Pilatus, the other tall peak in the Luzern area.
There's an area set aside for kids, with snowball scoops, a snowman target, and shovels for snow digging. The snow was very wet and slushy, so bring your rain gear to keep the kids from getting too wet. Our 3yr old had so much fun we could barely pull him off the mountain.
